OUR HISTORY Muon
was originally a techno project set up in 1998 by two friends looking for a record deal - David Waugh and Adam Hill. The record deal never quite materialised, but when David started writing DSP code for the Buzz Tracker software later that year he co-opted the name and unofficially launched
Muon Software.
The VST2 software synthesiser plug-in format was created by Steinberg Media Technologies AG for their Cubase sequencing software, and released as an open standard also in 1998. The first VST2 software synthesiser plug-in, called Neon, was released by Steinberg shortly after.
Turning its focus from Buzz machines to VST instruments, Muon Software released the first ever VST Instrument since Steinberg’s Neon, the Atom, in 1999. More than 30,000 copies were downloaded in the first three
months of release, and countless more since.
After the amazing success of Atom, the company Muon Software Ltd was started properly in March 2000 by David and his partner, Marilia. Since then, products like Tau Pro and Electron have received considerable critical acclaim in the music technology press world-wide.
OUR APPROACH We are proud
of our reputation for sound quality, and invest a great deal of time researching and developing new technologies. In its history, Muon has been responsible for many technological firsts and is often at the cutting edge.
However, we are also very much aware that virtual instruments are not just pieces of marvellous technology - to guide our product development process we
connect with many artists and studios owners world wide to find out what our users need, and how they make their music.
THE TEAM Muon Software Ltd is a small family company. David
Waugh (Managing Director) has a Masters degree in Software Engineering and a Bachelors degree in Business Studies. David is actively involved in research, development and support for all Muon products. He has over 15 years
experience working with music technology and as a DJ/producer and contributes articles to widely read magazines such as Computer Music.
Freelance designers like IanW and Decoder
provide their amazing artistic skills for the products’ user interfaces. Marilia (Finance Director/Administrator) and Derek (Company Secretary) provide their financial, administrative and legal skills on a daily basis to the company too.
